Rough Sleeping Crisis in Central London Raises Concerns for Local Businesses

Grosvenor Gardens, an affluent square in central London, has become a hotspot for aggressive rough sleepers, alarming both locals and tourists. This area, located near The Goring Hotel, has seen a rise in anti-social behaviour, with reports of harassment and theft affecting nearby businesses. Local shop owners have expressed frustration, noting incidents of theft and vandalism, including a significant robbery that resulted in £1,000 worth of goods being stolen.

The situation has escalated to the point where staff at local establishments feel unsafe, with reports of physical abuse from rough sleepers. A nearby hotel receptionist described the challenges of managing guests disturbed by the aggressive behaviour of individuals seeking shelter in the area. Despite the installation of security measures, businesses continue to struggle with the impact of rough sleeping on their operations.

Westminster City Council has acknowledged the issue, stating that while they invest heavily in support services for the homeless, the presence of rough sleepers can attract criminal activity. The council is calling for a collaborative approach involving immigration, police, and businesses to tackle the problem effectively.

As the new Prime Minister, Andy Burnham, pledges to end rough sleeping, the local community is left wondering how quickly and effectively these promises will translate into action. The ongoing crisis not only affects the safety and comfort of residents and visitors but also poses a significant threat to the economic vitality of this prestigious area.
