Serbia and Ukraine Strengthen Economic Ties with Free Trade Agreement in Sight

Serbia and Ukraine are set to deepen their economic cooperation, with both countries aiming to finalise a long-discussed free trade agreement by the end of the year. This agreement is not just a formality; it is crucial for Serbia’s aspirations to join the World Trade Organization and, subsequently, the European Union. The two nations have been negotiating this deal for over two decades, with agricultural tariffs and quotas previously blocking progress.

During a recent meeting in Belgrade, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy discussed not only the trade agreement but also Serbia’s commitment to assist in rebuilding Ukrainian cities devastated by the ongoing conflict. This support includes humanitarian aid and infrastructure assistance, particularly as Ukraine faces a challenging winter ahead.

The implications of this cooperation extend beyond immediate aid. Strengthening ties with Ukraine could shift Serbia’s economic landscape, potentially opening new markets and enhancing its geopolitical stance in the region. As Serbia navigates its complex relationship with Russia, this partnership may also signal a gradual pivot towards the West, despite its historical ties to Moscow.

Both leaders acknowledged the challenges ahead, including the slow pace of EU membership for both countries. However, the commitment to mutual support and economic collaboration could foster resilience in both nations, particularly as they face external pressures from ongoing conflicts and energy crises.
