A ferry carrying over 260 passengers capsized off the coast of Northern Cyprus, resulting in at least seven confirmed deaths. The incident occurred shortly after the vessel departed from the port of Kyrenia, heading towards Mersin in Turkey. Eyewitness reports indicate that the ferry began taking on water for reasons that remain unclear, prompting a distress call from the captain.

The Northern Cyprus Coast Guard has launched a significant search-and-rescue operation, deploying multiple naval units and helicopters to the scene. As of now, 237 individuals have been rescued, while 23 remain unaccounted for. This tragedy highlights the vulnerabilities in maritime safety protocols, especially for privately operated ferries in the region.

Local authorities have stated that investigations into the cause of the capsizing will be conducted. The incident raises concerns about the adequacy of safety measures in place for passenger vessels, particularly in busy tourist areas like Kyrenia.

As rescue efforts continue, the impact on local tourism and transport infrastructure could be profound, potentially leading to increased scrutiny of ferry operations and regulations in Northern Cyprus. The community is now grappling with the emotional toll of this disaster as families await news of their loved ones.
