UK Scientific Innovations Risk Being Lost Abroad

Britain’s scientific advancements are increasingly being exploited overseas, according to Science Minister Chris McDonald. He highlighted that researchers often seek funding abroad to commercialise their innovations, which leads to the loss of intellectual property developed in the UK. This trend is particularly evident in sectors like critical minerals, where UK research is upscaled in the US or elsewhere, ultimately benefiting foreign economies.

McDonald pointed to a lack of industrial laboratory space as a significant barrier to innovation in the UK. Many university spin-outs struggle to find the necessary capital to grow domestically, prompting them to look to the US or EU for investment. He emphasised the need for greater private investment to change this mindset and keep British innovations within the country.

The government has proposed expanding innovation centres, known as catapults, to help bridge the gap between research and commercialisation. However, funding cuts to organisations like the Science and Technology Facilities Council could jeopardise fundamental research, which is crucial for long-term scientific leadership.

Looking ahead, McDonald expressed optimism that fields like quantum computing and artificial intelligence could lead to major enterprises rooted in British science. His goal is to ensure that these innovations remain in the UK, rather than being lost to foreign markets, thereby benefiting the national economy.
