Visitors to Black Rock Sands in Gwynedd will face significant disruption this weekend as the main entrance has been closed. The closure, effective from Thursday evening until Tuesday morning, is to facilitate the delivery of a large shunt reactor by the National Grid. This delivery is crucial for a project aimed at reducing the visual impact of electricity infrastructure in the Eryri National Park.
The beach, known for allowing vehicles onto the sand, is expected to attract large crowds due to warm weather, making the timing of this closure particularly inconvenient. Once the shunt reactor arrives by barge, it will be transported inland on Monday, requiring a full police escort to manage traffic and ensure safety.
This project will ultimately lead to the dismantling of ten pylons and three kilometres of overhead power lines, replacing them with underground cables. This change is part of a broader effort to enhance the landscape’s visual appeal while maintaining reliable electricity transmission.
Gwynedd Council has advised beachgoers and motorists to be patient, as traffic congestion is anticipated in the surrounding areas. The local authority is working closely with the National Grid and police to mitigate disruption and ensure public safety during this essential operation.
