Access to England’s Rivers: A Growing Concern

Almost 75% of riverbanks in England are currently inaccessible to the public, raising significant concerns about outdoor access and community health. As heatwaves become more frequent, the lack of access to rivers limits opportunities for cooling off and enjoying nature, particularly for families seeking free recreational options.

The Right to Roam campaign highlights that 71% of riverbanks along main rivers lack any adjoining access, with 96% of rivers having no defined statutory right for activities like swimming. This situation not only restricts public enjoyment but also disconnects communities from their natural environments, which is vital for mental and physical well-being.

Environmental advocates argue that reconnecting people with rivers is essential for both public health and ecological restoration. The absence of access can lead to a lack of public advocacy for river conservation, as people are less likely to fight for places they cannot visit. This disconnect could hinder efforts to restore and protect these vital ecosystems.

As the government considers new initiatives to improve access, the urgency for change is clear. Campaigners are calling for a right of responsible access to water and land, emphasizing that such measures are crucial for fostering a healthier relationship between people and their natural surroundings.
