AI Traffic Cameras Set to Increase Fines for UK Drivers

As AI-powered traffic cameras expand across the UK, motorists face potential fines of up to £1,000 for various driving offences. Currently, around 12,000 Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras are in operation, scanning over 100 million number plates daily to ensure compliance with insurance, road tax, and MOT requirements.

The introduction of these cameras is not just about monitoring; it’s also about tightening regulations. Councils are increasingly using ANPR technology to enforce traffic rules, such as illegal turns and bus lane violations. This shift indicates a growing trend towards automated enforcement, which could lead to a significant increase in fines and penalties for drivers.

Moreover, the government is considering stricter penalties for those failing to pay Vehicle Excise Duty, including potential penalty points on driving licences. This could create a ripple effect, prompting more drivers to seek ways to manage their vehicle-related payments, as evidenced by a staggering 1,614% increase in searches for monthly road tax payments.

With court cases for motoring offences taking longer to resolve—up 29% since 2016—drivers are advised to ensure their vehicle documentation is up to date. Misconceptions about number plate visibility could also lead to unexpected fines, as ANPR cameras may misread plates that appear fine to the human eye. Regular checks and maintenance of number plates are now more crucial than ever for avoiding penalties.
