Birmingham New Street Station will be closed for five days over Christmas due to essential engineering work on its power lines. Starting from Christmas Eve, the £13 million upgrade aims to replace outdated wiring that has been in place since the 1960s. This closure will significantly impact travel plans during a peak holiday period, as the station is one of the busiest in the UK.
Network Rail has acknowledged that while Christmas is typically quieter for travel, the timing of this work is still inconvenient for many passengers. The upgrades are part of a larger three-year project intended to enhance the reliability of the rail network, with further closures expected in 2027 and 2028.
During the closure, passengers will need to rely on rail-replacement buses or local transport options, which may lead to longer journey times. Network Rail is urging travelers to plan ahead and will provide detailed information about alternative travel arrangements as tickets for Christmas travel become available.
Despite the construction, the station building will remain open, allowing access to shops and facilities. Staff will be present to assist passengers, ensuring that essential services continue during this period of disruption.
