Borehamwood’s Scaffolding Crisis: A Year of Inaction

Borehamwood High Street, known as ‘British Hollywood’, has been overshadowed by a 400ft-long scaffolding for over a year. Erected by Leathbond to address loose cladding, the structure has remained idle, causing significant disruption to local businesses and residents. Many shop owners report soaring service charges, with some seeing increases of over 400%, while foot traffic has plummeted due to the unsightly and obstructive scaffolding.

Local business owners like Komar Tourachi have faced severe financial strain, losing thousands weekly as their operations are hampered by the scaffolding. Tourachi’s service charges skyrocketed from £1,500 to £6,177, while others have similarly been burdened by unexpected costs. The situation has left many feeling trapped, as they are unable to sell their properties or sustain their businesses under the financial pressure.

Residents have also expressed frustration, with reports of increased accidents due to uneven surfaces and accessibility issues for those with mobility challenges. The local council’s decision to extend the scaffolding licence without any progress on repairs has sparked outrage, as many feel the safety rationale has been exploited for profit.

As the scaffolding continues to loom over the high street, the community is left wondering when, or if, the promised repairs will ever commence. The ongoing inaction raises questions about accountability and the impact of corporate interests on local livelihoods, highlighting a growing tension between residents and property management firms.
