The garage industry is urging the UK government to raise the MOT price cap from £54.85 to £95, citing the current rate as ‘unsustainable’. This price has not changed since 2010, despite significant increases in operational costs for garages, including labour, rent, and compliance expenses.
The Independent Garage Association highlights that without a substantial increase in the MOT fee, many garages may struggle to remain viable. The chief executive, Stuart James, noted that garage owners are facing an overwhelming cost burden that threatens their businesses.
In addition to the financial pressures, the industry is preparing for new requirements, such as electric vehicle mileage checks set to be implemented in 2028. This adds urgency to the call for a review of MOT fees, as garages will need to adapt to these changes while managing existing costs.
The Department for Transport has been approached for comment, but the lack of an updated fee structure raises concerns about the future sustainability of vehicle testing services across the UK.
