A new study warns that climate change may bring the chikungunya virus to Europe, as warmer temperatures expand the habitats of disease-carrying mosquitoes. The research indicates that regions like central Europe could become hotspots for this viral disease, which is primarily transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito. As these mosquitoes adapt to cooler climates, the risk of local transmission increases significantly.
Currently, chikungunya is not endemic to Europe, with cases mainly occurring in travellers returning from tropical areas. However, the study highlights that as climate change progresses, the virus could establish itself in temperate regions, posing a new public health challenge. The speed at which the virus develops inside mosquitoes also increases with rising temperatures, further elevating outbreak risks.
Health systems in the UK and other European countries are urged to prepare for potential outbreaks by enhancing mosquito surveillance and training healthcare workers to recognise symptoms early. This proactive approach is crucial as the disease burden is expected to escalate under climate change, which is altering the distribution of infectious diseases globally.
While there is no immediate cause for panic, the findings serve as a warning for public health officials. Early preparation and response strategies will be essential to mitigate the impact of chikungunya as it potentially spreads into new regions, including the UK, by 2040.
