New Fund Aims to End Female Genital Mutilation Worldwide

A groundbreaking $15.5 million fund has been launched to combat female genital mutilation (FGM), a practice affecting over 230 million women and girls globally. This initiative, spearheaded by the Wallace Global Fund, seeks to raise a total of $100 million to create significant momentum towards eradicating FGM within a generation. The urgency of this fund arises as funding for women’s rights initiatives declines, particularly for grassroots efforts led by FGM survivors.

The fund’s establishment comes at a critical time when international support for FGM eradication is waning. For instance, funding for a major UN initiative to end FGM dropped by 45% last year, highlighting a concerning trend that could jeopardise progress. Activists like Ifrah Ahmed, a survivor and founder of the Ifrah Foundation, stress that without sustained financial support, the fight against FGM will falter, risking the future of countless young girls.

Despite some legislative progress in countries like Somalia, where anti-FGM laws are being enacted, challenges remain. Recent legal battles, such as a constitutional challenge to The Gambia’s ban on FGM, underscore the fragility of these gains. Advocates warn that while awareness of FGM as a human rights violation has increased, the political landscape is increasingly hostile, threatening hard-won protections.

The Wallace Global Fund’s initiative aims to empower frontline activists who understand their communities’ needs best. By providing direct funding, the hope is to catalyse change and ensure that the momentum towards ending FGM is not only maintained but accelerated. This fund represents a pivotal moment in the global fight against a practice that has severe health implications and perpetuates gender-based violence.
