Chinese Hacking Threatens UK Farmers’ Food Security

A new report reveals that British farmers are at significant risk of Chinese hacking, as Beijing reportedly uses agricultural technology to spy on the UK’s food security. The Coalition on Secure Technology, led by Labour MP Graeme Downie, highlights that many farming tools, including GPS-guided tractors and drones, are embedded with Chinese-made chips, creating vulnerabilities that could be exploited by state-linked groups.

The implications of this surveillance are alarming. By monitoring farm outputs and gathering sensitive data, hostile actors could identify weaknesses in the UK’s food production system. This could lead to manipulation of agricultural data or even remote shutdowns of essential equipment, posing a direct threat to food security.

Despite farming not being classified as critical national infrastructure, the report argues that the increasing digitisation of agriculture makes it strategically vital. With around 70% of cellular internet-of-things modules produced in China, the risks extend beyond intelligence gathering to potential disruptions in food supply chains.

Downie urges the government to act swiftly, recommending that connected agricultural technology be classified as an emerging national resilience threat. As food security becomes increasingly intertwined with national security, the reliance on foreign-controlled technology must be addressed before it is too late.
