Rising temperatures across Africa are reshaping malaria transmission patterns, posing new challenges to health systems. While West and Central Africa have historically been the epicentres of malaria, climate change is making parts of Southern Africa and East Africa increasingly conducive to the disease. This shift could undermine decades of progress in malaria control and prevention.
The World Health Organization has highlighted that the RTS,S/AS01 malaria vaccine could play a crucial role in combating the rising threat, particularly among children in high-transmission areas. However, funding cuts have already jeopardised malaria control efforts, with many endemic countries reporting disruptions in services.
Olugbenga Mokuolu, a Nigerian health advisor, warns that a world too hot for malaria is still perilous for public health overall. The same heat affecting mosquito behaviours also poses risks to human health, indicating that the fight against malaria must adapt to these changing conditions.
As malaria risks shift geographically, countries must enhance their health systems and be prepared for aggressive anti-malaria programs in newly affected areas. Without significant investment and adaptation, many regions may find themselves unprepared for the evolving epidemiological landscape driven by climate change.
