Climate Change’s Hidden Toll on Gaza’s Health and Stability

Climate change is exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, with extreme heat and infrastructure damage leading to increased disease and displacement. As temperatures soar, the risk of dehydration and food spoilage rises, affecting daily life for residents. The recent heatwave, which saw temperatures exceed 40°C, has left many without adequate shelter or electricity, compounding the challenges faced by displaced populations.

Moreover, the ongoing conflict has generated significant carbon emissions, further straining Gaza’s fragile systems. Research indicates that military operations have contributed over 1.3 million tonnes of CO₂e, highlighting the overlooked environmental impact of warfare. This pollution, combined with climate change, is creating conditions ripe for disease outbreaks, including diarrhoeal diseases and skin infections, as sanitation systems fail under pressure.

The situation is dire, with nearly 800,000 people living in flood-prone areas, making them vulnerable to both climate shocks and health crises. Humanitarian agencies are calling for integrated climate adaptation strategies to be part of emergency responses, as the overlap of conflict and climate change leads to repeated crises with diminishing recovery time.

For the UK, this highlights the interconnectedness of global health and environmental issues. As climate change continues to affect regions like Gaza, the ripple effects may influence international stability and humanitarian efforts, necessitating a more proactive approach to climate resilience in aid strategies.
