Cornish Language on Road Signs: A Step Towards Equality

Cornwall Council is pushing for the inclusion of Cornish language on road signs, aiming to promote the language and instill local pride. The council has requested permission from the government to display both Cornish and English versions of place names on new and replacement signs. Currently, they lack the authority to implement this change, as existing regulations are stringent regarding road sign language and design.

Liberal Democrat councillor Dan Rogerson highlighted that Cornish has been granted the same status as Welsh and Scots Gaelic, advocating for equal representation on road signs. He emphasized that this initiative would not incur additional costs, as signs would only be updated when necessary, thus preserving existing signage while promoting the language.

Supporters of the initiative, like Nev Meek from the Federation of Old Cornwall Societies, argue that visible signage in Cornish would enhance the language’s status and encourage its use among residents. The council’s efforts reflect a broader desire for linguistic equality across the UK, where Welsh and Scots Gaelic are already represented.

The Department for Transport has expressed a commitment to reviewing legislation regarding road signs, indicating potential future changes that could facilitate the use of Cornish. This move could significantly impact the visibility and vitality of the Cornish language, fostering a renewed interest and engagement within the community.
