Crisis Centre Faces Closure Amid Soaring Rent Costs

Scotland’s only crisis centre for drug and alcohol addiction is on the brink of closure due to a significant rent increase imposed by its landlord, Glasgow City Property. The charity, Turning Point Scotland, has operated this vital service for over 30 years, providing essential support to individuals in life-threatening situations. The proposed rent hike from £65,000 to £131,000 per year has raised alarms about the sustainability of the service, which has seen a surge in demand with over 3,650 referrals in the past three years.

Turning Point’s chief executive, Neil Richardson, has described the landlord’s actions as ‘commercially aggressive,’ highlighting the potential risks to lives if the centre shuts down. The charity is also grappling with uncertainty over additional costs related to a nearby residential service, further complicating its financial situation. This comes on the heels of a previous £806,000 bill for dilapidation costs after the closure of another facility, raising concerns about the financial viability of providing crucial support services.

Scotland currently faces the highest drug death rates in Europe, with Glasgow leading the country. The Scottish government has initiated a long-term action plan to address these alarming statistics, yet the threat to Turning Point’s operations poses a significant barrier to progress. If the crisis centre closes, it could exacerbate the ongoing drug death emergency, undermining efforts to reduce harm and provide necessary treatment.

The situation underscores a broader issue of funding and support for addiction services in Scotland, where financial pressures are increasingly jeopardising essential services. As Turning Point Scotland seeks a resolution, the implications of this dispute extend beyond the charity itself, potentially affecting countless individuals who rely on its support for recovery and stability.
