Dry Danube River Disrupts Nuclear Power in Eastern Europe

The ongoing drought affecting the Danube River is severely impacting nuclear power generation in Romania and Hungary. Hungary’s Paks nuclear power plant has been operating at just 10% capacity due to insufficient cooling water, raising concerns about energy supply stability. Meanwhile, Romania’s Cernavoda plant, which relies entirely on the Danube for cooling, faced potential shutdowns as military efforts to improve water flow have been initiated.

In response to the crisis, Romania’s military detonated a rock outcrop upstream to enhance water levels, a move that underscores the urgency of the situation. If these measures fail, the Cernavoda plant could cease operations entirely, jeopardizing about 20% of Romania’s electricity supply. This scenario highlights the interconnectedness of regional energy systems and the potential for widespread power shortages.

The implications extend beyond nuclear energy, as industries in both countries are already feeling the strain. Major car manufacturers in Romania have suspended production, and Hungary has urged both industrial and residential users to conserve energy. The situation is compounded by forecasts of continued hot and dry weather, suggesting that the current energy crisis may persist.

As the Danube’s low water levels also affect freight transport in Germany, the broader economic impacts are becoming evident. This crisis serves as a stark reminder of how climate conditions can disrupt essential infrastructure and energy supplies, prompting urgent discussions on energy resilience and adaptation strategies across Europe.
