At the recent EU-Western Balkans summit in Montenegro, leaders expressed optimism about accelerating the accession of six candidate countries to the European Union. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz highlighted a Franco-German initiative aimed at creating incentives for faster reforms, signalling a shift in EU strategy to counter geopolitical challenges posed by Russia and China.
The proposed changes include granting candidate states observer status in EU meetings and integrating them into the Euro payment area. This approach aims to reassure Western Balkan nations of their welcome in the EU, especially as public support for accession remains high in countries like Montenegro.
However, the path to membership is complex, particularly for Serbia and Kosovo, where political ties to Russia complicate their EU aspirations. Merz emphasized the need for Serbia to clarify its future alignment, urging a decisive shift towards Europe.
As the EU seeks to enhance its influence in the region, the summit’s outcomes could reshape not only the political landscape of the Balkans but also the EU’s strategic positioning in response to global power dynamics.
