New Eurostar Route to Antwerp: What It Means for UK Travellers

Starting December 14, Eurostar will launch a direct service from London to Antwerp, significantly reducing travel time from over three hours to just 2 hours and 41 minutes. This new route is particularly appealing for those looking to explore Belgium beyond Brussels, as it eliminates the need for a transfer at Brussels-Midi/Zuid.

However, while this direct service enhances accessibility to Antwerp, it currently lacks a corresponding return route due to the absence of UK border and customs facilities at Antwerpen-Centraal. This limitation means that travellers will still need to navigate back through Brussels for their return journey, which could deter some from making the trip.

Antwerp, often overshadowed by Brussels and Bruges, is renowned for its vibrant fashion scene and diamond district, making it a unique destination for shopping and cultural experiences. The city is home to the Antwerp Six and boasts the largest diamond district globally, attracting visitors interested in both fashion and luxury.

As this route opens, it may encourage more UK tourists to explore Antwerp’s rich offerings, from its historic architecture to its culinary delights, including famous Belgian chocolates and fries. This could lead to increased economic activity in the city, benefiting local businesses and enhancing cultural exchange between the UK and Belgium.
