Gambian Women Revive Mangroves for Community Resilience

In The Gambia, women like Fatou Jarjue are leading efforts to restore mangrove ecosystems, crucial for their community’s survival. These coastal trees not only provide seafood but also act as natural barriers against flooding and erosion, vital as climate change intensifies. Jarjue has personally replanted over 5,000 mangroves, demonstrating a commitment to both conservation and sustainable livelihoods.

The rainy season forces women to shift from oyster harvesting to crabbing, highlighting the seasonal challenges they face. However, the closure of oyster harvesting during this time is often misunderstood. Contrary to popular belief, it’s not due to safety concerns but a necessary measure for ecological balance, allowing oyster populations to regenerate. This period is an investment in future yields, ensuring a healthy ecosystem and sustainable income.

As these women restore the mangroves, they witness a remarkable turnaround in their catches, with larger oysters returning to the waters. Their efforts not only enhance biodiversity but also empower future generations to understand the importance of ecological stewardship. Sussan Colley, another local, emphasizes the need for her children to learn both practical skills and environmental responsibility.

The transformation of the Tanbi Wetland illustrates the interconnectedness of conservation and community health. By nurturing their environment, these women are safeguarding their livelihoods against the threats of climate change, thus ensuring the well-being of their families and the resilience of their coastal community.
