Gatwick Airport Faces Fuel Shortage Amid Summer Travel Surge

Gatwick Airport is currently experiencing a significant fuel shortage, prompting airlines to take urgent measures to avoid disruption. Pilots have been instructed to carry as much fuel as possible from overseas before landing, as the airport anticipates at least 48 hours of constrained fuel availability. This situation arises during one of the busiest travel periods of the summer, raising concerns for British holidaymakers.

The shortage has been attributed to a technical fault at a key fuel farm supplying the airport, rather than geopolitical issues affecting fuel prices globally. Long-haul flights are particularly at risk, as they require refueling upon arrival, and many aircraft are already en route without the ability to carry extra fuel due to weight restrictions.

As airlines scramble to manage the crisis, the potential for flight cancellations or delays looms large, especially from Monday onwards. The situation is compounded by a recent power failure that disrupted water supply at the airport, further straining its operational capacity and reputation.

Gatwick officials are working closely with fuel suppliers to resolve the issue quickly, but the ongoing fuel crisis highlights vulnerabilities in airport logistics that could affect thousands of travellers. Passengers are advised to stay informed about their flight status as the situation develops.
