Gaza’s Orphan Crisis Highlighted by Marathon Event

In the wake of ongoing conflict, over 58,000 children in Gaza have lost one or both parents, creating a humanitarian crisis that demands urgent attention. A recent marathon event in Khan Younis aimed to raise awareness about the plight of these orphaned children, showcasing their resilience amidst devastation. Participants included children like Saif Hijazi, who, despite being paralysed, watched from his wheelchair as others ran, symbolising the struggle for normalcy in a war-torn environment.

The event, organised by International Networking for Humanitarian Indonesia, not only provided a platform for these children to engage with their community but also highlighted the dire need for psychological and financial support. Many families, already struggling with the loss of income and basic necessities, face even greater challenges when a primary caregiver is lost. This reality is exemplified by mothers like Warda Hijazi, who now bears the weight of providing for her children alone.

The marathon served as a reminder that orphaned children require more than just food and shelter; they need emotional support and a sense of security. As the conflict continues, the number of unaccompanied minors and those in need of care is rising, with UNICEF estimating that over one million children require urgent assistance. The event aimed to mobilise support for these vulnerable groups, urging the international community to take action.

As the situation in Gaza evolves, the stories of these children reflect a broader crisis that could have long-term implications for the region’s future. The need for sustained humanitarian efforts is critical, as the psychological scars of war will affect generations to come. The marathon not only highlighted their struggles but also called for a collective response to ensure these children are not forgotten in the chaos of conflict.
