The Hidden Dangers of Tourism in Mexico

As tourism in Mexico surges, so does the risk of human trafficking, particularly affecting women and children. With a record 20 million tourists visiting by May 2026, criminal organisations are exploiting this influx, turning the tourism boom into a breeding ground for sexual exploitation.

Survivors like Mixi Cruz highlight the emotional manipulation that often traps victims, making them unaware of their exploitation. Many are coerced into sex work at a young age, with familial ties complicating their escape. The alarming rise in reported trafficking incidents—up 45% in just one year—underscores the urgent need for awareness and action.

In the lead-up to major events like the World Cup, initiatives have been launched to educate the tourism industry about these risks. However, advocates argue that these measures may not be sufficient, as the demand for sex work remains unchanged despite increased tourist numbers. Language barriers further complicate the situation, leaving vulnerable individuals at greater risk.

The UN and local organisations are calling for stronger cross-border cooperation to combat trafficking. Yet, the reality is stark: many victims remain hidden, and the true scale of the problem is likely much larger than reported. Addressing this issue requires not just awareness but systemic change to protect the most vulnerable in society.
