India’s Food Safety Crisis: High-Profile Raids Reveal Deep Issues

Recent high-profile inspections at luxury hotels in India have exposed serious food safety and hygiene deficiencies, raising alarm about the country’s food safety standards. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) found significant issues at well-known establishments, including pest activity and poor sanitation practices. This scrutiny highlights a broader problem: while regulations exist, their enforcement is inconsistent and often reactive rather than proactive.

The FSSAI’s recent actions are not isolated; over 150 notices have been issued to food companies for misleading advertisements and health claims. Alarmingly, testing data shows that about one in five food samples fails to meet safety standards. This raises questions about the effectiveness of current food safety practices and the need for a cultural shift within the industry towards prioritising hygiene and safety at all times.

Industry experts argue that food safety should be ingrained in the operational culture of restaurants rather than treated as a checklist for inspections. The current focus on compliance could be an opportunity for the sector to transition to a prevention-oriented approach, ensuring that safety measures are consistently upheld.

As the FSSAI faces scrutiny from the Supreme Court regarding proposed warning labels for unhealthy packaged foods, the future of food safety in India hangs in the balance. The challenge remains: will these inspections lead to lasting improvements, or will they fade into the background until the next scandal arises?
