India has marked a significant milestone by successfully launching its first private-sector orbital rocket, Vikram-1. This achievement positions India as the third country to establish orbital launch capabilities through private enterprise, following the successful deployment of customer payloads into low-Earth orbit.
The Vikram-1 rocket, developed by Skyroot Aerospace, is a three-stage, 22-metre vehicle capable of carrying payloads up to 350kg. Its design includes robotic arms for clearing space debris, showcasing advancements in both technology and environmental responsibility in space operations.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the launch as an inspiration for young innovators, emphasizing its potential to stimulate interest in STEM fields among the youth. This event not only reflects India’s growing capabilities in the global space economy but also signals a shift towards increased private sector involvement in space exploration.
Skyroot, founded in 2018, has quickly gained traction, achieving a $1 billion valuation earlier this year. The successful launch of Vikram-1 is expected to pave the way for more commercial missions, further solidifying India’s position in the competitive space industry.
