Iran’s War: Stability Hides Underlying Crises

Despite the appearance of stability in Iran following the recent war, significant underlying issues threaten the regime’s long-term viability. The conflict, which began with US-Israeli airstrikes, has temporarily united political elites but has not resolved deep-seated economic and social grievances. As the war continues, the Iranian government faces increasing challenges related to legitimacy and public discontent, particularly among those affected by the harsh crackdown on dissent.

The economic fallout from the war is severe, with inflation soaring above 50% and widespread job losses in key industries like steel and petrochemicals. Many Iranians struggle to afford basic necessities, with the minimum wage barely covering essential services. This economic strain is likely to exacerbate public frustration, leading to potential unrest as the initial cohesion among elites begins to fray under pressure.

Moreover, the regime’s heavy-handed repression, including thousands of arbitrary arrests and political executions, has created an atmosphere of fear. While the government has mobilised supporters to demonstrate loyalty, the reality is that many citizens remain disillusioned, fearing for their safety and future. The nightly gatherings intended to showcase support often mask a deeper dissatisfaction with the regime’s inability to address pressing issues.

As the war drags on, the fragile ceasefire is frequently violated, and the underlying crises are expected to resurface. The current stability may be deceptive, as the Iranian government grapples with the consequences of its actions and the potential for renewed social unrest in the face of ongoing economic hardship.
