Lebanon’s Cautious Optimism for New Ceasefire with Israel

Lebanon’s Culture Minister Ghassane Salamé expressed cautious optimism regarding the recent ceasefire agreement with Israel, hoping it proves more effective than previous attempts. He noted that the prior ceasefire was not even a true truce, highlighting the fragility of the current situation. Salamé pointed out that the agreement’s success hinges on the commitment of both sides, particularly the Iran-backed Hezbollah group, to cease military actions and withdraw from sensitive areas.

The minister emphasized the role of the United States in brokering this deal, suggesting that American pressure was crucial for the Israeli government to engage in negotiations. This dynamic places Lebanon in a precarious position, caught between the escalating tensions between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and US President Donald Trump.

Salamé also raised concerns about the extensive damage inflicted on Lebanon during recent conflicts, with reports of 60 villages destroyed and significant heritage sites damaged. This destruction not only affects the physical landscape but also the cultural identity of the Lebanese people.

Despite the hopeful tone, Salamé acknowledged that some Israeli officials have already rejected the ceasefire, indicating potential challenges ahead. The situation remains fluid, and the commitment to peace will be tested in the coming days as both sides navigate their complex relationship.
