Lisburn Students Create Award-Winning Basketball Robot

A group of sixth-formers from Friends’ School in Lisburn has made headlines by winning the UK-wide First Tech Challenge robotics competition with their basketball-playing robot. This achievement not only showcases their technical skills but also highlights the growing importance of STEM education in the UK. The students dedicated hundreds of hours to design, build, and program their robot, demonstrating teamwork and innovation.

The competition, themed around robot basketball, required the team to solve complex challenges such as how to efficiently shoot and retrieve basketballs. Their success reflects a broader trend in education where practical, hands-on projects are increasingly valued, potentially inspiring other schools to adopt similar approaches.

While the team is celebrating their victory, they face a bittersweet moment as their A-Level exams coincide with the European finals in the Netherlands. This situation underscores the balancing act many students face between academic responsibilities and extracurricular passions, a common challenge in the UK education system.

The students also took the initiative to share their knowledge by hosting workshops for younger pupils, fostering interest in robotics and technology. This outreach not only benefits the local community but also contributes to a future workforce skilled in critical areas of technology and engineering.
