Met Police Boosts E-Bike Fleet to Combat Street Crime

The Metropolitan Police in London has expanded its electric bike fleet from five to 25, aiming to tackle the rising issue of street crime, particularly phone theft. This strategic move is seen as a significant enhancement in the police’s ability to respond swiftly to incidents across key boroughs such as Camden, Islington, and Hackney.

The introduction of these e-bikes is not just about increasing numbers; it represents a shift towards using advanced technology in policing. The Met claims that the deployment of e-bikes has already contributed to a reduction of over 13,000 phone thefts in the past year, highlighting their effectiveness in urban crime prevention.

Funding for this initiative comes from profits seized from criminal activities, showcasing a reinvestment strategy aimed at improving public safety. Mayor Sadiq Khan has endorsed the rollout, stating that these bikes will help police pursue offenders who exploit high-powered, illegally modified e-bikes for criminal purposes.

As neighbourhood crime rates have shown a decline, with personal thefts down by 24%, the expanded e-bike fleet is expected to further enhance police presence and response times in busy areas, ultimately contributing to a safer environment for Londoners.
