Planning Decision Threatens Local Pub’s Future

A landlord in Torfaen faces a significant setback as he must dismantle decking and a children’s play area at the Castell y Bwch Inn. The local council deemed these additions a “visual intrusion” in a designated Special Landscape Area, despite over 3,000 signatures supporting their retention.

Landlord Gary Bulmer, who invested £200,000 into the pub, argues that these facilities are crucial for attracting families and ensuring the pub’s viability. He claims that removing them could drastically reduce trade, especially as pubs in the area struggle with rising costs and changing consumer habits.

Bulmer is contemplating an appeal against the council’s decision, which could cost him around £2,500. He hopes to negotiate a compromise, potentially by enhancing the visual impact with landscaping. The situation highlights the ongoing challenges faced by local businesses in balancing community needs with regulatory constraints.

If the appeal fails, Bulmer may have to consider selling the pub or converting it to residential use, further illustrating the precarious nature of the hospitality industry in the current economic climate.
