Police Crack Down on Illegal Off-Roading to Protect Habitats

Police in North Wales are now empowered to seize illegal off-road vehicles on the spot, a move aimed at curbing the rising damage to protected habitats. This crackdown follows a notable increase in anti-social behaviour linked to off-roading, particularly in sensitive areas like the Berwyn Site of Special Scientific Interest. Offenders caught damaging these sites face immediate consequences, including the loss of their vehicles and hefty fines.

The new powers, introduced under the Crime and Policing Act 2026, allow officers to act without prior warning, addressing a growing concern over the environmental impact of off-roading. The damage to ancient peatlands, which can take centuries to recover, poses a significant threat to local biodiversity, including ground-nesting birds.

Social media has been identified as a contributing factor to the rise in illegal off-roading, with users sharing locations and encouraging others to partake in these activities. This trend not only affects the environment but also disrupts local communities, as increased footfall leads to littering and other forms of anti-social behaviour.

As authorities ramp up enforcement, the message is clear: illegal off-roading will not be tolerated. The long-term implications of this initiative could lead to a more sustainable approach to outdoor recreation, preserving vital ecosystems for future generations while ensuring that public access is respected and maintained.
