New President Signals Shift in Hungary’s Political Landscape

Hungary’s parliament has elected András Baka, a former judge and critic of Viktor Orbán, as the new president. This appointment follows the controversial removal of the previous president, Tamás Sulyok, and marks a significant shift in Hungary’s political landscape under Prime Minister Péter Magyar. Baka’s election is seen as a step towards restoring democratic governance and the rule of law, which many believe had been undermined during Orbán’s 16-year tenure.

The ruling Tisza party, which holds a two-thirds majority, nominated Baka for this largely ceremonial role. His background as a judge at the European Court of Human Rights lends credibility to his commitment to democratic principles. However, his silence on Sulyok’s removal raises questions about the legitimacy of the new government’s reforms and its approach to governance.

Critics have drawn parallels between Sulyok’s ousting and Orbán’s tactics to consolidate power, suggesting that the current administration may be repeating past mistakes. Baka’s presidency is expected to be temporary, as Magyar plans to draft a new constitution through public consultation, aiming to distance Hungary from Orbán’s legacy.

As Hungary navigates this transition, the implications for civil liberties and democratic institutions will be closely monitored both domestically and by international observers. The outcome of these reforms could redefine Hungary’s relationship with the EU and its commitment to democratic norms.
