Rare Snails Hatch During Journey to Zoo

A remarkable event occurred during a six-hour car journey from Wales to Kent, where glutinous snails laid eggs en route to Wingham Wildlife Park. Once widespread across UK waterways, these tiny snails are now confined to a single lake in Wales due to habitat disruption and environmental changes.

The zoo’s assistant curator, Samantha Eden, reported that the journey began with six adult snails, and by the time they arrived, approximately 12 egg pods had been laid. This unexpected breeding success highlights the resilience of the species, which is part of a national conservation effort.

In just two months, the park has successfully moved 130 baby snails to establish a new colony. This initiative is part of a broader collaboration with other wildlife parks and zoos to find suitable habitats for future releases, aiming to bolster the dwindling wild populations.

The breeding programme not only showcases the zoo’s commitment to conservation but also serves as a reminder of the fragility of ecosystems. As these snails begin to thrive, it raises awareness about the importance of protecting rare species and their habitats for future generations.
