Rare Suffragette Christmas Card Unearthed at Roadshow

A rare Christmas card from the Suffragette movement, dating back to 1910, has been discovered at a vintage roadshow in Mold, Flintshire. This card, valued at £2,500, is not just a festive greeting but a piece of political history, designed to raise funds and awareness for women’s suffrage. Surviving examples are exceptionally scarce due to their intended disposable nature, making this find particularly significant.

The card was produced by the Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU), which was pivotal in the fight for women’s voting rights. These cards combined traditional holiday messages with political slogans, helping to keep the suffrage movement visible during the Christmas season. The WSPU, founded by Emmeline Pankhurst, adopted a confrontational approach to campaigning, which included the distribution of such cards.

Antiques specialist Matt Case highlighted the excitement surrounding the card’s discovery, noting that few have survived in good condition. Museums, including the London Museum, now hold similar cards as important artefacts that document the struggle for women’s rights. The card’s historical context underscores the intersection of festive traditions and significant social movements.

In Wales, Lady Rhondda’s long campaign for women’s rights in the House of Lords exemplifies the broader fight for equality that these cards represented. As the centenary of women’s suffrage approaches, such discoveries remind us of the ongoing relevance of these historical struggles in today’s society.
