Rethinking Ebike Parking in London: Lessons from Paris

As London embraces shared ebikes, the challenge of poorly parked bikes has become a pressing issue. Misparked ebikes clutter pavements, creating hazards for pedestrians, particularly those with disabilities. However, the solution lies not in reducing the number of bikes but in rethinking parking infrastructure.

Cities like Paris have successfully integrated shared ebikes into their transport systems by converting car parking spaces into dedicated docking stations. This approach not only alleviates clutter but also enhances public space, allowing for wider pavements and more greenery. With car ownership in London declining, now is the perfect time to consider similar changes.

The recent English Devolution and Community Empowerment Act presents an opportunity for Transport for London to design a comprehensive licensing framework for shared micromobility. This framework could prioritize dedicated parking for ebikes, transforming how Londoners interact with their urban environment.

By reallocating even a fraction of on-street parking currently occupied by second cars, London could accommodate nearly one million shared ebikes. This shift would not only solve the parking dilemma but also promote a more sustainable and efficient transport network for all residents.
