A groundbreaking development in medical technology has emerged from Madrid’s Gregorio Marañón Hospital, where a custom-made bone prosthesis has successfully prevented the amputation of a patient’s leg. This innovative metamaterial prosthesis, designed for a 38-year-old man with a tibial sarcoma, mimics the mechanical properties of bone using a lightweight titanium structure created through 3D printing.

Unlike traditional prosthetics, which often replace bone with solid materials, this prosthesis features a network of fine titanium rods that distribute loads similarly to natural bone tissue. This design not only allows for better integration with the patient’s existing bone but also significantly reduces the risk of complications and rejection.
