Scotland Faces Extreme Heat: Gritters Deployed to Protect Roads

Scotland is bracing for its hottest day of the year, with temperatures expected to soar to 30C in southern regions. This extreme heat meets the criteria for a heatwave, as defined by the Met Office, which requires temperatures to exceed 25C for three consecutive days in the same area. In response, gritters have been deployed in the Borders to spread sand on roads, a measure aimed at reflecting heat and preventing the melting of road surfaces, which can reach up to 45C.

The Scottish Borders Council has reported significant damage to roads, with closures already in effect due to heat-related issues. David Robertson, the council’s chief executive, explained that the gritters are a proactive step to protect infrastructure. As the heat intensifies, the risk of road surface melting increases, posing hazards for drivers and potentially leading to costly repairs.

While the heatwave brings challenges, it also highlights the need for communities to adapt to changing weather patterns. Local councils are urging residents to consider the well-being of frontline workers who must operate in these extreme conditions. Additionally, safety reminders regarding water activities have been issued, as the heat can lead to increased risks of drowning.

As Scotland enjoys this brief spell of summer, the forecast indicates a potential shift with thunderstorms expected to follow. This fluctuation in weather patterns serves as a reminder of the unpredictability of climate conditions and the importance of preparedness for both extreme heat and subsequent storms.
