As the August bank holiday approaches, Britons are facing skyrocketing flight prices, particularly for those returning home. Travel expert Simon Calder highlighted that while flights to the Mediterranean may be affordable early next week, the costs for returning flights are surging due to high demand and limited availability.
For instance, a British Airways flight from Malaga to Heathrow on August 31 is priced at an astonishing £1,280 per person, translating to £5,000 for a family of four. This sharp increase is attributed to families rushing back before schools reopen on September 1, creating a perfect storm of demand.
Calder suggests that holidaymakers might save money by considering alternative UK airports, where prices can vary significantly. For example, flights from Alicante to Manchester could exceed £200, while a flight to Edinburgh might only cost £21, as Scottish schools have already resumed.
However, travellers should also be aware of potential rail disruptions over the bank holiday weekend, which could complicate travel plans further. With the East Coast Main Line closing for engineering work and strikes affecting services, planning ahead is crucial for those looking to avoid inflated costs and travel chaos.
