Strengthening Human Rights: A Call to Action

The ongoing repression of free speech in Turkey highlights a critical need for stronger human rights protections across Europe. As authoritarianism rises, the silence of European governments can inadvertently empower oppressive regimes. The case of Osman Kavala, a human rights philanthropist imprisoned since 2017 despite court orders for his release, exemplifies the failures of the European human rights system.

Professors Philip Leach and Başak Çalı argue that governments must take decisive action to enforce the European Convention on Human Rights. They stress that mere verbal support is insufficient; tangible measures are necessary to hold violators accountable and protect individuals like Kavala from political persecution.

The implications of this call to action extend beyond Turkey. If European states fail to act, it could embolden other governments to disregard human rights norms, leading to a broader erosion of freedoms. This situation serves as a warning sign for the integrity of human rights protections across the continent.

In a time when democratic values are under threat, the need for a robust response from European governments is more urgent than ever. Strengthening these protections could not only aid those currently suffering but also reinforce the principles of democracy and justice throughout Europe.
