Taliban’s Violent Response to Hijab Protest Raises Alarm

In Herat, Afghanistan, a protest supporting women arrested for dress code violations turned violent when Taliban security forces opened fire on demonstrators. Witnesses reported that the protest, which drew 100 to 150 men showing solidarity with women detained for not wearing full chadors, was met with sticks, whips, and gunfire. Injuries were reported, but the exact number remains unclear.

The Taliban’s harsh crackdown highlights the regime’s strict enforcement of Sharia law, particularly regarding women’s rights. Since regaining power in 2021, the Taliban have imposed severe restrictions on women, including bans on education and specific dress codes. The protest’s organization via social media underscores a growing, albeit risky, civil resistance among Afghans.

Human rights advocates have condemned the Taliban’s use of lethal force, calling for accountability and the release of those detained for peaceful protests. The United Nations has also expressed alarm over the excessive violence against demonstrators, urging respect for citizens’ freedom of expression.

This incident signals a troubling trend of escalating violence against dissent in Afghanistan, raising concerns about the future of civil liberties under Taliban rule. As the international community watches, the potential for further unrest looms, particularly as more citizens seek to challenge oppressive regulations.
