Teenagers Demand Action on Violence Against Women in Northern Ireland

Four teenagers from Ballycastle are taking a stand against violence towards women and girls, launching ‘The Athrú Project’ to advocate for a dedicated Minister for Women’s Safety and Health in Northern Ireland. Disheartened by the rising incidents of violence, including the deaths of 31 women since 2020, they believe focused governmental action is essential for change.

The group argues that a dedicated minister could streamline efforts to improve women’s safety, healthcare, and education. They highlight the inadequacies in current infrastructure, such as poor lighting and lack of CCTV, which contribute to women’s fears when walking alone.

Their campaign also seeks to enhance sex and relationship education in schools, ensuring young people are better informed about their bodies and relationships. They stress that addressing violence against women should be a priority for all government departments, not just a single initiative.

While there have been some governmental efforts to tackle this issue, the teenagers feel that a dedicated minister could bring about more effective and coordinated action. Their initiative reflects a growing demand for systemic change in how women’s safety is approached in Northern Ireland.
