Unseen Crisis: The Hidden Homelessness of Women in England

Recent findings reveal a significant discrepancy in the number of homeless women in England, with charities estimating that two-thirds of those counted in a recent census would not be recorded by government methods. This underreporting means that many women, like Victoria, who experienced homelessness without the typical markers, remain invisible to support services.

The census conducted by Solace Women’s Aid and the Single Homeless Project identified 1,406 women who had slept rough in the previous three months, a stark contrast to the official count of just 733 on a single night. This gap highlights the urgent need for a revised understanding of homelessness that includes women’s unique experiences and living situations.

The implications are profound: without accurate data, services tailored to women’s needs cannot be developed, leaving many without essential support. Domestic abuse is cited as a primary cause of female homelessness, underscoring the necessity for targeted interventions to address this issue.

As the government aims to halve long-term rough sleeping by the end of the Parliament, the charities stress that achieving this goal requires a comprehensive understanding of the problem. They advocate for a change in the definition of rough sleeping to better reflect the realities faced by women, ensuring that no one is left behind in the fight against homelessness.
