Women Face Agonising Pain During Routine Hysteroscopies

Hysteroscopies, a common procedure in the NHS, are often described as painful and distressing by patients. Despite being classified as ‘low complexity,’ many women report inadequate pain management and a lack of support during the procedure. This has raised concerns about the standards of care and the need for better pain relief options.

Patients like Beth Harris have shared harrowing experiences, highlighting the emotional and physical toll of these procedures. The inconsistency in pain relief options across hospitals adds to the frustration, as many women feel they are not adequately informed about what to expect.

The Women’s Health Strategy introduced earlier this year aimed to improve patient care by ensuring informed consent and a choice of pain relief. However, advocates argue that little progress has been made since then, leaving many women in a vulnerable position.

As awareness grows, the call for change intensifies. Campaigners are pushing for parity in treatment options, similar to those available for men undergoing colonoscopies, to ensure that all patients receive the care and respect they deserve during such invasive procedures.
