Debating the British Empire: A New Educational Initiative

A new educational project is encouraging pupils to engage with the complex history of the British Empire. Launched by the charity Parallel Histories, the initiative aims to provide students with contrasting perspectives on this contentious topic, fostering critical thinking and debate. The charity’s latest eBook, On British Empire, will be available for free to schools, allowing students to explore arguments for and against the empire’s legacy.

The project involves students forming teams to debate various viewpoints, such as whether the empire was a force for progress or a system of exploitation. This approach not only enhances their understanding of history but also equips them with skills in argumentation and empathy by requiring them to argue both sides of the debate.

Former Labour minister Bill Rammell, who leads the initiative, highlights that a significant majority of Britons support teaching contested history in schools. This reflects a growing recognition of the importance of understanding diverse historical narratives, especially in a multicultural society.

As students return to school, this initiative could reshape how history is taught, encouraging a more nuanced understanding of the past. By engaging with these debates, pupils may develop a more informed perspective on contemporary issues related to colonialism and its lasting impacts.
