UK Government Bans Disposable BBQ Sales Amid Wildfire Threat

The UK government has implemented a temporary ban on the sale of disposable barbecues due to their significant risk of causing wildfires during the ongoing drought and heatwave. This decision follows a series of serious wildfires reported across the country, with Prime Minister Andy Burnham highlighting the urgency of the situation by stating that Britain is currently a ‘tinderbox’.

The Department for Business, Innovation, Science and Trade has deemed these barbecues unsafe under current conditions, advising that they should not be sold in stores or online. This ban comes after an emergency Cobra meeting and is part of a broader framework established in 2023, which allows retailers to suspend sales during extreme heat events.

Retailers had already begun to voluntarily halt sales of disposable barbecues in response to local council requests and fire safety guidelines. Burnham has urged the public to exercise caution, warning that any outdoor fire poses a risk to lives and property.

As the ban is reviewed, it reflects a growing awareness of the dangers posed by climate conditions, prompting a shift in consumer behaviour and retail practices regarding outdoor products. The government’s proactive stance aims to mitigate further incidents as the country faces challenging weather conditions.
